Recently, Member of Parliament (MP) Randall Garrison (LGBTT critic for the NDP) reintroduced into Parliament a Bill to amend the Canadian Human Rights Act (CHRA) and the Criminal Code of Canada to include gender identity and gender expression as prohibited grounds for discrimination.

This Bill – Bill C-279 – had a previous manifestation, Bill C-389, which made it through Parliament, but died at the Senate when the government was dissolved in March 2011. Now, thanks to the re-introduction by MP Garrison, we have another chance to make these human rights protections a reality.

Millions of North Americans wear purple on Spirit Day as a sign of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth and to speak out against bullying. Spirit Day was started in 2010 by teenager Brittany McMillan as a response to the young people who had taken their own lives. Observed annually on October 20, individuals, schools, organizations, corporations, media professionals and celebrities wear purple, which symbolizes spirit on the rainbow flag.

Getting involved is easy -- simply "go purple" on today as we work to create a world in which LGBT teens are celebrated and accepted for who they are.

It's not ok for our LGBT youth to have to wait until it gets better. Let's wear purple today and consider what role we can play in making it better now.

What: Right To Dance: Ongoing Classes: 6 months of free professional drop in classes in body conditioning, hip hop, urban dance, ballet, and contemporary dance. Classes will be taught with an anti-oppressive framework in order to create an affirming space for marginalized people with a focus on LGBTTIQQ2S* youth, youth of colour, as well as youth with varying body types, class backgrounds, and abilities

Trans and queer folks, and their allies are welcome to mark Transgender Day of Remembrance in Mississauga on November 20, 2010.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance was set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honour Rita Hester, whose murder on November 29, 1998, kicked off the "Remembering Our Dead" web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Rita's murder - like most transgender murder cases - has yet to be solved.

Join community members and service providers, hear from speakers, participate in the candlelight vigil, take a moment of silence, remember those who have been hurt or killed by transphobic violence.

An international celebration of gay rights will be held in Toronto in 2014.

The city has been chosen to host World Pride, a statement on the website of the Pride Toronto organization announced Sunday.

World Pride, which includes a parade, festivals and cultural activities, promotes lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues on the international stage.

The first such event was held in Rome in 2000, said the Toronto statement.

The most recent World Pride was set to take place in Jerusalem in August 2006, but was cancelled due to a violent Israeli-Lebanese conflict, the website said.

The next event is set for just prior to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London in 2012.

"A festival of this nature will bring Pride contingents from the world over, building international awareness of our culture and identities," Pride Toronto spokeswoman Crystal Moore said in a statement.

"World Pride 2014 will transform our local pride and community spirit, while generating a positive impact on our economy, our tourism and commercial industry, and our physical and social community."

International revellers have long flocked to Toronto’s annual Pride Week, but in 2014 the whole world might be invited.

Yesterday, Pride Toronto announced its bid to host World Pride in 2014. Toronto’s Pride Week is already one of the biggest such events worldwide, but in 2014 organizers would like to “kick it up a few notches,” said Mark Singh, chair of the bid committee and current co-chair of Pride Toronto. “Basically, we’re just making our event, which is already such a globally popular event, into something a lot bigger and on the world’s stage.” Toronto’s pitch will be made at October’s InterPride annual general meeting in St. Petersburg, Fla. Singh said he believes Stockholm is the only competition. The event would fall during the regular Pride week in 2014, but would be substantially bigger and more expensive, costing an estimated $10 million rather than the $4 million spent this year. Pride Toronto would need some financial support.

The provincial government provided $350,000 for this year’s festivities, and Premier Dalton McGuinty has already provided a letter of support for the bid. Singh said the federal government pitched in $400,000 this year and he hopes for more next year.

After nine years on the main strip of Toronto's gay village, Zelda's restaurant shut its doors last month without a word of warning. From 2 a.m. until dawn, owner Michael Swann and his staff filled a moving van with kitchen appliances, dishes and bottles of alcohol.

Swann says the quick move was because a bigger, cheaper place became available on Yonge St. With the lease on his Church location up for renewal, he says his landlord wanted to raise the rent from $27,000 to $35,000 a month.

Queer It Up 2009!!!

Queer it up Mississauga's Pride March was held at East Mississauga Community Centre on July 18th 2009. Special thanks to all the amazing QX participants and allied supporters that showed up! We worked together as a community to show our PRIDE in Peel Region. We are grateful for all the people who honked, waved, and showed their support while we were walking along Dundas street!!! It was a proud day in Peel Region for it's Queer, Trans and allied communities. We are already thinking about Queer It Up 2010! Lots of photos are posted on Facebook,check them out Marc Simcox, one of the organizes said"this is only our second march, but our pride has to start somewhere,"speaking to a crowd of more than 100 cheering participants. The main goal of the pride march was to promote health and wellness, as well as give Mississauga's GLBT community a safe social space to interact and have fun. The day's events included live entertainment, music, tarot readings and drag shows. Participants were treated to a free barbecue after the march. The event was held by Queer Exposure (QXposure), a partnership between Associated Youth Services of Peel, the East Mississauga CHC and the Peel HIV/AIDS Network. It was created through a local forum in 2007 that focused on strengthening the voice of queer and trans communities in Peel. ! Feel free to post feedback on what you'd like to see different for next year. Qxposure holds monthly drop-in sessions and support groups for people who have nowhere else to turn to including people who are Transgendered . The event is important for the LGBT community because it gives us a social space to interact, feel safe, and not have to worry about intolerance and discrimination, said organizer Nicole Ghanie-Opondo. "There aren't a lot of social spaces that are free and accessible," she said. It also provides awareness that the LGBT community is a major part of the region. Queer It Up! has attracted the support of many local community groups and organizations and the organizers hope that the march will turn into a parade in the near future. We're committed to building this event with the community, not just for the community. The East Mississauga Community Health Centre is located at 2555 Dixie Road, Unit 7.

Queer It Up! - Peel's FIRST ever PRIDE march took place on July 19th, 2008. With over 70 diverse participants, and the support of Peel Region Police and agency organizers, the march strode peacefully westbound on Dundas Street all the way to Constitution Blvd, and then back eastbound to Dixie and Dundas. A BBQ, entertainment, and fun followed the march at the East Mississauga Community Health Centre. Thanks to the Mississauga News and Rogers Cable 10 staff who were respectful and sensitive to making sure people were comfortable with their presence. Central Toronto Youth Services is pleased to announce the publication of *Families in TRANSition*, the first comprehensive Canadian publication to address the needs of parents and families supporting their trans children. *Families in TRANSition* summarizes the experiences, strategies, and successes of a working group of community consultants - researchers, counsellors, community leaders, parents, as well as trans youth themselves. The guide aims be inviting and inclusive of families who may be at any one of a number of stages, and especially so for parents who may have had their adolescent or young adult child come out recently as trans. *Families in TRANSition* provides practical and sensitive parent-to-parent and professional therapeutic advice, and tries to anticipate and address common questions and concerns, as well as normalize the varied reactions families may have. QX Queer Health Literature Review

A literature review is available electronically (please contact us for a print copy). The literature review gives an overview research on the social determinants of health and their relevance for the Queer communities in Peel Region. The term Queer as used in this document is used as an umbrella term to capture all folk who identify under the LGBTTTIQQ acronym (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Transsexual, Two Spirited, Intersexed, Questioning and Queer). It is recognized however that not all trans folk would identify s queer if they identify as heterosexual. While the social determinants of health are no different for Queer and Trans communities, the literature review based on existing research, highlights how Queer and Trans communities can experience the social determinants of health in a unique way that includes the impacts of heterosexism and trans/homophobia. Trans Training in Peel

QXposure hosted a Trans Training for service providers in Peel Region on March 28th through the wonderful expertise of the 519 Community Centre facilitators, Jake Pyne and Yasmeen Persad. A diverse audience of social service organizations and health providers actively participated in exploring the issues that Trans communities face when accessing health and social systems. This training was intended to improve capacity amongst participants to service and meet the needs of Trans communities, and second to begin a longer-term discussion to create more inclusive and responsive services for trans communities in Peel. Peel Queer and Trans Environmental Scan

QXposure understands the unique health issues for these communities and the barriers to health care access due to a lack of recognition of these unique issues by service providers. An environmental scan was conducted to begin to investigate the opinions and knowledge around queer and trans issues of service providers in the region of Peel and also to discover what, if any, specific services existed to cater to this demographic. The focus of this environmental scan was to identify current service provision for queer and trans communities in Peel. It was also intended to highlight gaps in service and offer some insight into the knowledge and opinions of service providers around these communities. It will be helpful if this document is read in-conjunction with the queer and trans and trans health literature review – created by QXposure1 - so that a better understanding of the social determinants of health for queer and trans can be achieved. Recognizing and understanding the stigma and discrimination that are apparent for queer and trans identifying folk – and their allies, is paramount to understanding the need for specific service provision for these communities. QX Community Consultation, Mississauga

QXposure made history in Peel Region by holding the first Queer and Trans community consultation at the Burnamthorpe Library Theatre on October 18th, 2007.

Coordinated by the East Mississauga Community Health Centre, in partnership with the Peel HIV/AIDS Network, the event brought together over 45 community members, service providers, front-line workers, and community members from all over Peel Region and the GTA.

Q-Xposure’s mission is to improve the health and well-being of Queer communities in Mississauga through a social determinants of health perspective, guided by an anti-racist and anti-oppressive framework which recognizes the specific needs of racialized Queer communities.

Welcome to QXposure's blog! Our history began with the planning of a community forum in mid-2007. The goal of this ground-breaking community forum for Mississauga was to encourage resident and social service provider input into strengthening the voice of diverse Queer and Trans communities. Over 45 people gathered at the Burnamthorpe Library Theatre in Mississauga to engage a panel of Queer and Trans service providers (mostly servicing Toronto) and to participate in a community 'game' to discuss oppression, privilege and community change. A post-forum report will be posted online shortly and will contain summaries of the group discussions, contacts for the panelists, and future directions based on the recommendations of the forum participants.
